Saint John's Abbey Church: Marcel Breuer and the Creation of a Modern Sacred Space

Victoria M. Young

U. of Minnesota Press

216 pages

In the 1950s, the brethren at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptists in Collegeville, Minnesota collaborated with architect Marcel Breuer to design and construct a new church. Two decades later they had designed twelve buildings and constructed ten. The book relies extensively on photographs and primary documents, like letters and drawings, to document the construction on the modern sculptural concrete church and the selection of the furnishings, art and stained glass that is found inside. A theme that runs thorough out the book is the importance of modernism in the design of sacred space. ([umlaut] Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
