Sage and Novell Ally for Small Businesses Accountancy.

UK-based, Sage Group, the world's-largest PC accounting program provider, has announced a joint venture with Novell to integrate its accounting software suite, Sage Line 50, with Novell Small Business Suite 5, network operating system.

The bundled package is aimed at capitalizing on the lucrative small business year 2000 upgrade market. A new server plus five user connection license for the integrated software and operating system will retail at $1,295, with upgrades available for 5-, 10- and 25-user connections at $695, $995 and $1,695 respectively.

"Year 2000 is still a major driver for small businesses to network their PCs. With multiple stand alone PCs running independent applications, checking for Year 2000 bugs re-entering systems, through unauthorized CDs, disks and the internet is costly and time-consuming," said Rob Furnivall, sales manager at Provo, Utah-based Novell.

Novell says the offering will enable small firms to extend their accounting systems beyond standalone PCs to staff across the organization on a local area network or via the Internet. Managers can use Novell NetWare's security features to control the applications, such as inventory customer account status and cashflow and credit control information, available to each employee.
