Safety promised by brighter bus.

Yellow US-style buses may be the way forward for schoolkids in the region.

A brightly coloured bus is now serving Green Croft Primary School in Gateshead as a pilot scheme.

It was designed by Go North East and includes additional safety features to protect its users, many of which were suggested by pupils themselves.

They include increased CCTV, improved emergency warning buzzers and redesigned internal lights.

Each school to participate in the scheme will have to appoint a dedicated transport co-ordinator to maintain safety awareness both on and off the bus.

Martin Harris of Go North East said: "We recognise how important it is that children can travel safely and comfortably to and from school.

"We have had a positive response to the school bus scheme, and hope that many more schools will recognise the advantages of the safety-enhanced buses."
