Safe staffing theme for this year's IND.
The ICN tool kit gives information to support the argument for appropriate staffing levels, and includes a nurse staffing assessment toot, a list of activities for nurses to improve safe staffing, examples of nurse-patient ratios and recommendations to guide nursing associations as they lobby for adjustments in work environments and adequate levers of staff to provide safe care. The kit acknowledges that safe staffing goes beyond numbers and includes such variables as workloads, work environments, patient acuity, skill levels and mix of nursing staff.
NZNO chief executive Geoff Annals said it was very timely that IND this year would coincide with the release of the report of the joint NZNO/ district health boards' Safe Staffing/Healthy Workplaces Committee of Inquiry. "It is great to see ICN and NZNO totally in line with what's important in nursing. Information in the toolkit reinforces the committee's concerns and shows work being done internationally to improve patient safety through better staffing."
