SECRETARIAT

Cert U, 123mins ***

The life and times of the celebrated racehorse Secretariat get the Disney treatment in a biopic that canters when it should gallop.

Diane Lane plays mum-of-four Penny Chenery who, in 1969, takes on her father's horse breeding business when he falls ill. With the ranch about to go bust, the plucky housewife senses an about-to-be born foal - Secretariat - might just be a future champion and enlists an eccentric trainer (John Malkovich) and a determined jockey to help realise her dream.

With its linear structure, nostalgic glow and distinct lack of surprises, Secretariat seems to have wandered into cinemas after leaving its TV movie hitching post.
