Saab offers more for less.

Byline: Steve Hughes

SAAB reckons that when it comes to combining performance and economy it is now just plain sailing.

The Swedish car company is introducing new versions of its 9-3 saloon and SportWagon models that achieve the best of both worlds without making waves in the eyes of environmentalists.

The new 9-3 Turbo Editions mark the launch of Saab's revised EcoPower diesel engine range, which is the technology designed to offer lower

CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency.

The 1.9TiD engine generates 150hp but now produces CO2 emissions of just 137g/km with combined fuel economy of virtually 55mpg. Then there is the more powerful twin-turbo 1.9TTiD engine that produces 180bhp with CO2 emissions of just 139g/km and economy of 53mpg.

The SportWagon's figures are also improved for both engines, to 144g/km of CO2 and 51mpg economy, which puts most Saab Turbo Edition models with diesel engines in the vehicle excise duty Band E.

The twin-turbo diesel models are rebadged TTiD and are now among the top performers in their class in terms of performance, economy and environmental-friendliness. They also come with a more generous amount of equipment to avoid sales sinking during the current financial storm.

The list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a nine-speaker 150-watt audio system with MP3 compatibility plus cruise control.

Saab sales boss David Pugh, says: "The new Turbo Edition has more power for less money than its rivals plus the bonus of many of the extras from our other most prestigious models as standard." Prices are pounds 19,995 for the 1.8t manual saloon and pounds 21,076 for the SportWagon, pounds 20,495 for the 120bhp 1.9 TID saloon and pounds 21,571 for the SportWagon, pounds 20,995 for the 150bhp 1.9 TID saloon and pounds 22,076 for the Sport Wagon, with the flagship 180bhp 1.9TTiD weighing in at pounds 22,495 for the saloon and pounds 23,576 for the SportWagon..The twin-turbo diesel models are rebadged TTiD and are now among the top performers in their class
