SYRIA - Dr. Ahmad Al Moualla.
Another prominent figure in the oil sector, Moualla has been
chairman of the Syrian Petroleum Corp. (SPC) since late 1997. Moualla
succeeded Mohammed Khaddour who had headed the company since 1991 to
replace the long-serving CEO Ali Jubran. Khaddour had begun
restructuring SPC's upstream and downstream divisions. Moualla,
encouraged by Jamal, accelerated the process in 1998. Under Minister
Jamal's guidance, the SPC head nominates the chairmen of the oil
and gas producing JVs who are usually elected automatically by the
latter's boards of directors. These chairmen are chosen from among
the most senior SPC executives.
