SYRIA: WHERE WE STAND.
WE AGREE with this statement by Jeremy Corbin, leader of the British Labour Party: "Already this devastating conflict has cost more than 500,000 lives and led to five million refugees being forced to flee Syria, and six million internally displaced. We must put negotiations for a political settlement centre stage, and not slip into a new cycle of military reaction and counter-reaction."
The great power faceoff between the West and Russia over the accusations of the use of poisoned gas by the Assad dictatorship in Syria shows yet again the necessity of a generalized nuclear disarmament. The unfortunate Syrians have become ground zero for various factions including their own government and backed and armed by a cynical collection of regional and international players--the U.S., the Saudis, Russia, Israel, Iran, Turkey and France--to name the most obvious. The country has been virtually destroyed. Now bellicose brinkmanship between Trump and his NATO allies and Putin and Assad threatens a wider conflict with nuclear implications. Such madness must stop!
