SYNTREX TECHNOLOGIES INTEGRATES SHOW NETWORK FOR BANYAN USER CONFERENCE; ATTENDEES PICTURES TO APPEAR ON SHOW LAN

SAN FRANCISCO, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Syntrex Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Phoenix Technologies, Inc., and a technology leader in network integration services, has successfully implemented the show network for the Association of Banyan Users International (ABUI) Conference in San Francisco. ABUI(asterisk)Net, the unique working "show net," allows conference attendees to communicate and share information as if they were at their own desktop, regardless of geographic location. Over 1,000 Conference attendees can schedule meetings, receive phone messages, access on-line databases and Bulletin Board Services, and communicate with each other and their home offices via electronic mail and other e-mail gateways.
For the first time, Syntrex has integrated image processing on to the network. Attendees, exhibitors and industry trade press, who will be photographed upon registration, will automatically be able to see photos of each other when accessing the attendee user directory. This will facilitate meetings and other scheduled events among attendees who may not yet have met face-to-face. The photo directory is a feature of PhoneLine(R), a product from CCOM Information Systems. Another first, ABUI(asterisk)Net users will also have access to travel and entertainment information about San Francisco using Local Expert, a product of Strategic Mapping, Inc. Local Expert provides ABUI(asterisk)Net users with maps of the city, information on current events, such as times and places of cultural activities, local points of interest and shopping and restaurant guides.
ABUI(asterisk)Net made its debut at the fall ABUI in Boston, and is now a regular feature at the national, semi-annual VINES(R) User Conferences. The network is up 24-hours-a-day in order to be truly convenient for attendees, exhibitors, and press staff. "ABUI(asterisk)Net has proven itself a vital resource to conference attendees. We're pleased at the significant number of applications that have been provided at this Conference by our exhibitor vendors," said ABUI President Jackson Shaw.
In early February Syntrex accepted the Conference Planning Committee's invitation to be the ABUI(asterisk)Net integrator. Syntrex's services involved design and management of the physical network layer, construction and management of the local and wide area network, and support of the ABUI(asterisk)Net Help Desk throughout the conference. Syntrex network engineers, working at ABUI headquarters in Chicago and in Syntrex's San Francisco office, staged and tested ABUI(asterisk)Net servers and systems software prior to installation at the conference.
Attendees and industry trade press at the San Francisco Conference are able to access ABUI(asterisk)Net via more than 50 client workstations, contributed by IBM Corporation, who also supplied two of the network servers. Additional servers were provided by Acer America Corporation and Dell Computer. 3COM(R) Corporation supplied interface cards, hubs and routers. NCR Corporation was instrumental in supplying their WaveLan cards to enable wireless connectivity to the network from remote locations.
The ABUI(asterisk)Net network is running the VINES 5.5 network operating system provided by Banyan Systems, Inc. In addition to PhoneLine and Local Expert, over 15 applications are running on ABUI(asterisk)Net, including e-mail packages from Beyond Incorporated, NetPro, LANShark, Reach Software and Banyan Systems. Other network capabilities include a jobs bulletin board, phone message retrieval, and electronic messaging via MCI Mail Gateway using V-Bridge and Sprint's TeleMail using Zoomit X.400.
