SYNTREX TECHNOLOGIES AND AIR FORCE DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON WIN PRESTIGIOUS ENTERPRISE NETWORK EXCELLENCE AWARD

VALLEY FORGE, Pa., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Syntrex Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Phoenix Technologies, Inc., and a technology leader in integration services, announced today that the company and its client, the Air Force District of Washington (AFDW), 1100th National Capitol Region Support Group, were jointly recognized by the Enterprise Network Excellence (ENNE) Award program as winners in the single-site category. Winners were announced at the ENNE Awards Reception held on Oct. 4 in Dallas, where the Networld conference was hosted. Now in its fifth year, the ENNE Awards honor users of enterprise networks that provide a competitive advantage in the business environment. The Awards are hosted by Network World, IDG's newsweekly of enterprise network computing, and Networld. Winners in six categories are selected by a 15-member judging panel.
The AFDW LAN supports more than 1,200 users on 20 native Banyan(R) servers and five Tricord Superservers with the Banyan VINES(R) for SCO(R) UNIX(R) network operating system. The LAN connects various AFDW locations in Washington via AFNET (T1 communications lines) and 3Com bridges. AFDW depends on the LAN to support its administrative functions. Network applications include electronic mail, image processing, office automation and transaction processing across multiple database management systems. Another major application is data communications to Unisys 1100/2200 mainframes, and TCP/IP access into many UNIX(R) hosts.
A Syntrex client since 1985, AFDW is now on its third generation, and first open systems LAN. For this latest network implementation, several leading edge network systems were competitively reviewed by AFDW and the Banyan VINES, SCO UNIX and Tricord solution submitted by Syntrex was selected. Working with AFDW, Syntrex integrated the image application to handle all of AFDW's travel, supply, budget and commercial services operations. The imaging system has dramatically increased productivity and cut costs by eliminating the need for manual handling of paper. AFDW was selected as an ENNE Award winner because it was able to effect these significant savings through the use of networking technology.
