SYNTEX ELECTS NEW DIRECTOR; FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE JOINS SYNTEX CORP. BOARD

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Syntex Corp. (NYSE: SYN) has elected Robert Stevens Miller Jr., an experienced financial executive, as a new director.
Miller, 51, fills the vacancy left by the recent death of former Syntex board member Jerome Farmer, 73, who held the position for 16 years. Farmer had planned to retire from the board in Dec. 1993.
Miller earned a well-deserved reputation as a leading corporate financial strategist for his achievements at Chrysler Corp., where he served between 1979 and 1992. He served nine years as Chrysler's chief financial officer, and in 1990 he was elected vice chairman of the board, responsible for Chrysler International Operations, Chrysler Technologies, and the Chrysler Financial Corp.
Miller began his career in 1968 at the Ford Motor Co., where he worked for 11 years. While at Ford, he served as chief financial officer for the company's Asia Pacific operations and as vice president of finance at Ford Venezuela.
In 1992, Miller became a senior partner in James D. Wolfensohn Inc., investment bankers, where he specialized in advising companies in transition. He left Wolfensohn earlier this year, and is currently vice president and treasurer of Moore Mill and Lumber Co., a privately held company in Oregon.
"At a time when Syntex is restructuring the entire company to be more competitive in the changing healthcare environment, re-engineering key operations, and emphasizing cash flow management, Miller's strategic finance expertise will be a valuable addition to our board deliberations," said Paul Freiman, Syntex chairman and chief executive officer. "We are extremely pleased to have him join our Board."
Miller also serves on the boards of directors of U.S. Bancorp, Federal-Mogul Corp., Fluke Corp. and Pope & Talbot. Miller served as chairman of the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute from 1991 to 1993, and as chairman of the United States Committee of the Pacific Basin Economic Council from 1991 to 1992.
Miller received his bachelor's degree in Economics from Stanford University in 1963. He holds a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School and a master's degree in Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Syntex Corp., a multinational healthcare company with approximately $2 billion in annual sales, discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human and animal pharmaceutical products and medical diagnostic systems.
