SYNTELLECT AND TV ANSWER ANNOUNCE PRODUCT AND MARKETING AGREEMENT
THAT LINKS LEADERS IN INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES TO DRIVE MARKET
RESTON, Va., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Syntellect Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNL) of Phoenix, the interactive voice response (IVR) industry leader, and TV Answer, Inc., announced a product development and marketing agreement designed to accelerate acceptance of interactive, or two-way, television by U.S. Consumers and businesses, and to expand the services the two companies provide their customers.
The agreement outlines the companies' plans to develop and market the Syntellect Answer Module, which will connect TV Answer's interactive television network to Syntellect's interactive voice response systems, which are already installed in 6,000 customer sites, including banks, insurance companies, government agencies and educational institutions.
"We are developing a system that will simplify connecting service providers with consumers through household appliances which are multi-functional and convenient," said Len Smith, vice president of TV Answer. "Our research shows that the bulk of consumer bank transactions, for example, already take place in the home, and since most of these are still paper-based we have a clear set of targets. Syntellect has successfully tapped this market with its voice technology, and we are enthusiastic about the prospects of working with them to provide people similar access to information visually."
Syntellect and TV Answer will jointly market the Syntellect TV Answer Module throughout the United States to Syntellect's installed base of IVR customers, as well as to service providers of TV Answer. All service and support activities will be managed by Syntellect. The cost of the product and availability have not been determined.
 How It Works
The Syntellect TV Answer Module and TV Answer's interactive television system work in conjunction with a modified version of Syntellect's versatile INFOBOT IVR family of products. Syntellect's new systems will allow customers to access personal bank data, for example, and visually display the information at home on their television screen. When the interactive TV user asks for bank information, the request is transformed into a radio signal converted for digital transmission and beamed via satellite to the interactive TV service provider, via TV Answer.
The Syntellect TV Answer module and the modified Syntellect INFOBOT provide the interaction between information on the TV Answer satellite network and the database of the service provider's host computer.
"The partnering between Syntellect and TV Answer, the leader in interactive television, will enable us to expand our services and offer our installed base new ways to serve our customers," said Tom Mayer, president and chief executive officer of Syntellect. "Syntellect is the first IVR vendor to recognize and enter the market for alternative banking methods, and we are excited about the prospects our partnership with TV Answer offers."
TV Answer, the leader in the development of wireless, interactive video and data services (IVDS) has led technology in the industry since 1986. TV Answer will be available to consumers by mid-1993. The roll out schedule will be determined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is anticipated to start issuing licenses for interactive television service by the end of 1992.
TV Answer, and its manufacturing partner, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP), are committed to placing 1.5 million home units, called Interactive Television Appliances (ITAs) into households during the first year of service.
Syntellect is the world market leader in Interactive Voice Response with more than 6,000 INFOBOT IVR systems installed worldwide in 35 countries on five continents. Syntellect customers range from Fortune 500 industrials and leading companies in banking and insurance to major government agencies and educational institutions.
