SYNCOR INTERNATIONAL EXPANDS TO THIRD PET SITE

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Syncor International Corporation (NASDAQ: SCOR) today announced it entered into an agreement to operate the cyclotron at the Northern California Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Center located in Sacramento, Calif., and to distribute positron emission tomography (PET) isotopes. This is Syncor's third PET site.
In conjunction with the operation of the cyclotron, the company will relocate its Sacramento radiopharmacy to this new location. Prior to the agreement, the cyclotron was operated by the Northern California PET Imaging Center, a non-profit corporation, which is managed by Mercy Healthcare Sacramento and Sutter Community Hospitals. The site now includes a pharmacy, a cyclotron and positron emission tomography scanner.
"The opening of this PET pharmacy further positions Syncor on the leading edge of this promising imaging technology," said Gene McGrevin, president and chief executive officer. "Syncor has already demonstrated through our two other PET centers that a central radiopharmacy can efficiently service a number of imaging centers. We will continue to work with the surrounding medical community to further enhance the expanded use of this cost effective modality. As cost containment pressure accelerates, PET could become a key diagnostic and monitoring technology."
PET is a non-invasive, safe and cost-effective imaging tool which shows the metabolic functioning of an organ or tissue. Physicians primarily utilize PET in four areas of medicine -- cardiology, neurology, oncology and psychiatry. Syncor has been involved in two joint venture PET centers, one at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix and the other at the University of Southern California. Currently, there are only about 100 PET sites worldwide, which includes approximately 60 in the United States.
Syncor International Corporation operates an expanding network of 108 nuclear pharmacy service centers. The company compounds and dispenses patient specific intravenous drugs and solutions for use in diagnostic imaging and a complete range of high-tech pharmacy services. Syncor services over 6,000 hospitals, clinics and physicians' offices. Syncor is the only national pharmacy network of its kind that provides this combination of diagnostic and monitoring services to hospitals and alternate markets.
