SYNCOR COMMITS TO JOINT TRAINING PROGRAM WITH UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO
AND EXPANDS DISTRIBUTION NETWORK TO ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
CHATSWORTH, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Syncor International Corporation (NASDAQ: SCOR) announced today that it has entered into a long-term agreement with the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy to provide UNM students pursuing a degree in radiopharmacy with a primary practical training site. In addition, the College of Pharmacy has decided to discontinue the operation of its commercial radiopharmacy, concentrating resources on maintaining the nationwide leadership position in radiopharmaceutical education. As part of a separate agreement, Syncor has acquired the assets of Albuquerque Nuclear, Inc., a privately held commercial radiopharmacy recently opened in the Albuquerque area for the distribution of radiopharmaceuticals to the local marketplace. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The UNM College of Pharmacy founded the first centralized radiopharmacy in the United States more than 20 years ago. During a recent interview, William M. Hadley, dean of the College of Pharmacy, was extremely pleased with the agreement and stated, "Syncor's entry into the Albuquerque market and long-term training agreement will establish strong ties between the College of Pharmacy and the industry. This relationship will be key in maintaining the college's leadership position in radiopharmacy by providing highly trained pharmacists and leaders for the industry."
Gene McGrevin, Syncor's president and CEO, explained the significance of the University of New Mexico agreement: "Previously, Syncor had limited distribution capabilities in the state of New Mexico. Our entry into this market will strengthen our nationwide pharmacy network. Of equal importance is our agreement to continue to support the UNM program that trains nuclear pharmacists. The University of New Mexico will continue to be an important recruiting source for highly trained nuclear pharmacists that we will need to support our future expansion plans."
Syncor International operates a nationwide network of 92 nuclear pharmacy centers and 14 home care pharmacies. The company prepares and delivers patient-specific intravenous drugs and solutions for use in diagnostic imaging and a complete range of products for home infusion therapy. Syncor services over 5,000 hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, nursing facilities, and home-based patients. The only national pharmacy network of its kind, Syncor is unique in combining diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring services for both hospitals and alternate- site markets.
