SYMBOLICS ANNOUNCES OPEN GENERA SOFTWARE; OBJECT-ORIENTED SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT AVAILABLE ON DEC'S ALPHA AXP WORKSTATIONS

CONCORD, Mass., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbolics, Inc. today announced that is shipping Open Genera(TM), a new version of its proven Genera(R) object-oriented environment for software development, on the DEC 3000 AXP workstations from Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC).
"Symbolics is now providing its cornerstone product, Genera, on an industry-standard platform," said Kenneth J. Tarpey, chairman, president and CEO of Symbolics. "With all the functionality of our Genera products, Open Genera gives our customers the economy and flexibility of open systems with all the advantages of our proprietary software."
Initially, Open Genera runs as a user process on the 64-bit DEC OSF/1 UNIX operating system running on Digital's Alpha AXP workstations. Symbolics currently is evaluating moving Open Genera to the Windows NT environment and Pentium-based machines.
Applications developed with Open Genera software can be deployed under the Genera or Open Genera environments, or on any platform or operating system that supports a common Lisp compiler.
Open Genera is an integrated object-oriented development environment for Lisp programmers that includes an incremental compiler, symbolic debugger, source code control facility, syntax sensitive editor, and automatic memory management.
Since Open Genera software originally was designed as a complete object-oriented operating system -- providing unparalleled integration among programming tools, application code and the development environment -- it effectively eliminates the most common programming errors that delay projects and reduce programmer productivity.
Under the DEC OSF/1 operating system, Open Genera manages the development and execution of application code in one common address space, so it can check for common errors and bugs as it executes the application code under development. Programmers can immediately locate a problem, fix it, and resume processing from any point in their program. This functionality allows complex applications that require frequent updates to be developed and deployed more rapidly.
"We have been very impressed with the Alpha AXP development platform supporting the DEC OSF/1 operating system," said Saiid Zarrabian, Symbolics vice president. "We chose the Alpha AXP architecture because it's the best 64-bit architecture available. From a technical standpoint, it's the clear winner for performance. From a marketing standpoint, our customers will be able to develop and deploy applications on a broad range of scalable AXP systems and take advantage of the machine's outstanding price/performance."
