SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS BAR CODE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR COMPUTER ASSOCIATES SOFTWARE

 BOHEMIA, N.Y., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL) and Computer Associates International (NYSE: CA) today announced that Symbol data transaction devices now can be seamlessly incorporated for use with CA-ASM/WORKSTATION and CA-NETMAN/PC, bringing the accuracy and ease of bar code data input to leading Computer Associate software systems.
 Sales forces of the two companies, as well as value-added resellers, now offer Symbol product configurations that may include the Symbol Laser Radio Terminal (LRT 3800) or the Symbol Laser Data Terminal (LDT 3805) or the Symbol PDT 3300 as the portable workstation and data collection device.
 The two Long Island, N.Y.-based companies in 1992 announced a strategic alliance to enable CA clients to seamlessly implement bar code-based solutions using symbol products and services on existing computer systems or platforms.

"It provides linkage between the traditional bar code environment and the customer's 'point of transaction' and extends the customer's existing architecture without requiring system upgrade or modification."

 The Symbol LRT 3800 combines a non-contract laser-based bar code scanner, a 16-bit DOS computer and the Symbol Spectrum One RF radio, and allows multiple users to scan, transmit or receive information in real- time to a host computer. The LDT 3805 includes a bar code scanner and a 16-bit DOS computer in various memory configurations. The Symbol PDT 3300 is a rugged and lightweight portable 16-bit DOS computer, available in several configurations designed for on-the-move applications.
 Users of CA-ASM/WORKSTATION, the leading PC-based media management system, can use Symbol devices to track the movement of bar coded media from library to modern tape devices and back. Critical media, such as corporate documents and storage tapes, are used at thousands of companies for archival storage. Remote vaulting of this media, for off- site archival purposes, can be managed with this system.
 Users of CA-NETMAN/PC, the industry-leading data center administration package for managing IS assets through a single, common interface, can execute bar code solutions to enhance data capture. Using symbol devices and CA-NETMAN/PC, users enhance asset tracking and automate inventory collection, thereby controlling costs and enhancing productivity.
