SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES NAMES SAL ALINI SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SYSTEMS GROUP

BOHEMIA, N.Y., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems, today announced that Sal Alini has been appointed senior vice president of the company's recently established Systems Group. Alini, 49, a 28- year veteran of the computing and telecommunications industry, joins Symbol from NYNEX Corp., where he was managing director of its Data Networking Services Division.
The Symbol Technologies Systems Group was organized in 1992 to provide a focal point for all of the company's resources involved in the development and delivery of value added products and services associated with Symbol's networking product lines. Based in San Jose, Calif., it comprises three activities: Strategic Systems, responsible for custom software development, systems integration and project management services; Systems Sales Support, which teams with Symbol's Sales organization to structure systems-level business offerings; and the RF Systems Design Center, charged with responsibility for the development of the company's networking platforms.
"Sal's addition to our team is another key step in building a robust systems development and integration capability to complement our leadership in core bar code-based technology and products. His depth of experience in the computer systems industry adds strength to our senior management team and provides strong leadership to the group of professionals who have been so instrumental in our recent gains in the data transaction systems business," said Raymond R. Martino, Symbol president and chief operating officer.
"Our Systems Group gives us the ability to design, integrate and deliver complete application solutions to our customers. It allows us to effectively deliver critical system services to our customers, differentiates us from our competitors and provides Symbol with a growing value-added revenue stream," Martino said.
Alini earlier was vice president and general manager of Concurrent Computer Corporation, a Perkin-Elmer spin-off that had been the company's High Performance Systems Division, where Alini previously served as vice president for research and development. Still earlier at Perkin-Elmer, Alini was R&D vice president and directed the CAD/CAM unit and software development activities following the company's acquisition of Interdata Corporation, a super-minicomputer company, where Alini served as director of systems products. He began his career at Bell Laboratories and Honeywell Information Systems.
Alini holds a master's degree in engineering management and computer systems from Northeastern University and earned a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Monmouth College in New Jersey. He attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems with more than two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code laser scanners, portable computers and radio frequency data communications networks that are used as strategic building blocks in system solutions for retailing, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, package and parcel delivery and other industries.
