SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES NEW HANDS-FREE SCANNER FOR PDF417 AT ID EXPO; EIGHT COMPANIES ANNOUNCE PDF417-COMPATIBLE PRODUCTS

BOHEMIA, N.Y., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems, made several announcements today at ID Expo, a major automatic identification trade show and conference.
The announcements underscore the industry's growing acceptance and commitment to PDF417 two-dimensional bar code symbology. Developed by Symbol Technologies, PDF417 serves as a paper-based communications protocol for transferring data between computer systems without keying.
At the show, Symbol announced PDF 6000, a new hands-free laser scanner optimized to read PDF417. In addition, eight independent companies announced support for Symbol PDF417.
"As these announcements attest, PDF417 continues to garner market acceptance as a powerful data-management tool," said Raymond R. Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies.
"The PDF 6000, along with the hand-held PDF 1000 introduced in l992, and the number of PDF417 compatible products introduced by our partners, allow businesses worldwide to put PDF417 to work," Martino added.
Mounted at a workstation, the PDF 6000 permits keyless data entry by scanning both PDF417 and traditional linear bar code, making it ideal for forms data entry such as invoices, purchase orders and shipping manifests; manufacturing process control, work-in-process operations; returns processing; and small-item identification.
Using standard RS232 communication ports, the PDF 6000 interfaces with a variety of computing systems including PCs, workstations and computing terminals.

Continued Third-Party Support for PDF
Eight vendors announced support for PDF417, the paper-based communications protocol for transferring a file's worth of data between computer systems without rekeying or re-entering data. PDF417 also is used as a high-density, high capacity "portable data file" to provide low-cost access to large amounts of information without referencing an external database.
Symbol released the PDF417 specifications to the public domain in 1990 to foster third-party development of applications based on the new dense code.
Companies announcing PDF417 support for printing systems and solutions include AccuScan, Inc., Conyers, Ga.; Cognoscente Software International Inc., West Vancouver, British Columbia; Progressive Microtechnology Inc., Cincinnati; SATO America, Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif.; Strandware, Eau Claire, Wis.; and Unimark, Inc., Overland Park, Kan.
Companies that developed new customized applications integrating PDF417 include Qual/Soft Corporation, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and Systems Application Engineering, Inc., Houston.
These companies join the ranks of other firms who last year announced business technology solutions based on PDF417.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-driven data transaction systems with two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code laser scanners, portable computers and radio frequency data communications networks that are used as strategic building blocks in system solutions for retailing, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, package and parcel delivery and other industries.
