SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES LASERTOUCH FOR LASER-BASED
 CONTACT SCANNING
New Product Alters Competitive Landscape of Bar Code Data
 Capture Marketplace
BOHEMIA, N.Y., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL) today introduced the Symbol LT 1700 LaserTouch(tm), a family of revolutionary laser-based bar code scanners that for the first time combines the performance and accuracy of laser-based bar code technology with the ergonomics of "touch" scanning for applications where contact-only scanning is sufficient.
The new product is being unveiled and demonstrated this week in Chicago at ID Expo, a major trade show and exhibition for the automatic identification marketplace.
LaserTouch is ideally suited to a number of applications where the items to be scanned and the work environment lend themselves to simply touching the bar code with the scanner. These are typically low- to medium-volume scanning applications including certain types of retail point-of-sale (POS) as well as workstation and portable terminal data entry.
Priced competitively with traditional touch scanners, LaserTouch's superior laser performance provides faster, more accurate reading of a wide range of bar codes, including difficult, low contrast and high density symbols.
"Symbol recognizes that different users have different scanning requirements, even when performing the same or similar tasks," said Stuart Itkin, senior director of marketing. "LaserTouch complements our existing product line and enables Symbol to offer each customer the right solution for every environment and application."
LaserTouch incorporates an innovative design to create the first true moving beam scanner with no internal moving parts that wear. The patented harmonic scan element is similar in principal to a tuning fork. Through the use of a suspended piece of Mylar, an inert space-age polymer, the scan element "resonates" at a fixed frequency. The result is a scanner which is extremely reliable, durable and rugged -- able to withstand repeated five-foot drops to concrete.
In designing LaserTouch, Symbol Technologies studied the natural motions of people in their actual work environments. Based on this research, the company designed the product to be easy to use, comfortable to hold and intuitive to operate.
"LaserTouch truly is a revolutionary product that enables a new base of customers to receive the superior quality and reliability of Symbol products, as well as experience and security of Symbol -- the bar code scanning pioneer and only full data capture solutions company," said Ray Martino, president and chief operating officer of Symbol Technologies. "Unlike traditional contact scanners, LaserTouch provides the precision and performance of laser scanning for those applications which don't require the flexibility and working range of our LS2000 and LS8500 families of hand-held laser scanners."
The LaserTouch LT1700 family of touch scanners is available in triggered or triggerless versions. Triggerless models are intended for fixed point-of-sale terminals, workstations and PCs. Triggered versions conserve battery power when used with portable data collection devices. In addition, integrated interface versions allow direct connection to most workstations, portable data terminals, point-of-sale devices and PCs. Integrated interface versions include scanner output, wand emulation, RS-232-C, IBM 4683/4, OCIA and keyboard wedge.
Available in September 1992, LaserTouch is list priced from $675 to $749 depending upon configuration. The product comes standard with a full one-year warranty.
Symbol Technologies is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, health care and other industries.
