SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES EXPECTS LOWER SECOND HALF SALES
BOHEMIA, N.Y., Sept. 14 -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL)

said today that a review of third-quarter results to date and projections for operating results for the remainder of the quarter indicate that revenues will be below the 1991 third-quarter. Lower revenues, together with the nonrecurring charge of $6 million associated with a workforce reduction announced on Aug. 20, will result in a loss for the third-quarter ending Sept. 30, 1992. The lower-than-expected revenues are confined to North American operations, due principally to the continuing weakness in the U.S. retail market, which we expect to continue through the fourth quarter of 1992.
"Long-term prospects for the company remain strong," said Dr. Jerome Swartz, chairman and chief executive officer of Symbol, "based on Symbol's technology and market leadership position, coupled with expected growth areas such as bar code-based wireless applications and, our PDF 417 two-dimensional bar code system."
Mr. Raymond Martino, the company's president and chief operating officer added that "the company remains committed to a balance of near- term actions to hold costs, while ensuring that key development programs are appropriately funded and that the highest level of customer support is maintained."
Symbol Technologies, Inc. is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, health care and other industries.
