SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES EXPANDS SPREAD-SPECTRUM-BASED PORTABLE TERMINALS;
      INTRODUCES BAR CODE-BASED PRODUCTS AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
    BOHEMIA, N.Y., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced products that round out its family of portable terminals based on its Spectrum One(tm) spread spectrum radio frequency (RF) communication network. The products include the PRC 3310, VRC 3910, Long Range LRT and Extended Temperature LRT.
    The new products are being demonstrated this week at Scan-Tech '91 in Dallas, the trade show for automatic identification manufacturers and customers. Symbol Technologies also is introducing STEP, Symbol Technologies Education Partnership, a grants program designed for secondary and higher education institutions with automatic identification curricula.
    The PRC 3310 portable radio terminal is a DOS-based, 16-bit hand-held computer that incorporates the Spectrum One wireless network and enables real-time, wireless data communication and collection. The VRC 3910 is a ruggedized, vehicle-mount version of the PRC 3310 that also employs Spectrum One. It is ideally suited for warehouse applications, allowing a user operating a forklift to collect and transmit data instantly.
    Optional, customized versions of the LRT 3800 laser radio terminal utilize the Spectrum One wireless network for specific applications. The Long Range LRT is designed to accurately scan 40 mil bar codes at distances up to five feet. The Extended Temperature LRT/LDT is sealed against internal condensation and withstands temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius. The device is ideal for cold-weather and cold-storage data collection applications. The customized LDT 3805 integrated terminal also was introduced to provide integrated bar code scanning and hand-held computing in batch data collection.
    Symbol Technologies STEP program will encourage, facilitate and enhance automatic identification curricula in secondary and higher education through the use of standard and custom equipment grants, "expertise-on-loan" from the range of Symbol divisions and design centers, educational material and travel grants to professors. Ohio University, the first recipient of a STEP Equipment Grant, is the home of the Center for Automatic Identification Education and Research, the nation's only research center dedicated to the study of automatic identification technologies.
    Along with the expanded radio-based portable data terminals and the STEP program, Symbol Technologies announced additional new products and services:
   -- Optional Modules For PDT 3300: Enabling customers to upgrade their 16-bit DOS-based portable data terminals to meet changing needs. The modules include an Integrated Scan Module, an internal modem, single- and four-slot cradles for data transfer, an optical communication end-cap and expanded memory.
    -- Application Host Connectivity Options: A comprehensive set of Access Controllers that enable the full line of Symbol products to connect to an array of host computer systems.
    -- PDF 417 Support: Two of the leading manufacturers of bar code printers, Zebra Technologies and Monarch Marking Systems, now support the Symbol Technologies PDF 417, the first two-dimensional bar code that stores vast amounts of information in a symbol the size of a postage stamp.
    -- PS 1004 Portable Bar Code Printer: Designed specifically for industrial and backroom portable bar code printing, the PS 1004 is the fastest printer in its class and produces bar code labels 4.25 inches wide and up to six inches long. The printer produces labels in either vertical, "ladder" style; or horizontal, "picket fence" style; and has full graphics capabilities for producing backgrounds, logos or specific designs.
    -- Traxall(tm), Warehousing System: Symbol Technologies, in collaboration with American Turnkey, a leading developer and supplier of real-time control systems, announced Traxall, a truly turnkey warehouse and distribution control system.
