SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES AND IBM ANNOUNCE MARKETING AGREEMENT IN EUROPE
BOHEMIA, N.Y., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL) and IBM, the respective industry leaders in bar code-based data capture and computer automation, today announced an agreement under which IBM will market a range of Symbol bar code scanner and portable hand-held computer products for international markets.
Negotiated between IBM Europe and Symbol Technologies International, this long-term multimillion-dollar agreement covering Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East and Africa, provides the basis for local IBM companies and business partners to purchase Symbol products from the corresponding local Symbol sales organizations.
Today, bar code data capture is increasingly recognized as a strategic technology that will become ever more fundamental to the total system solutions provided by IBM, not only in retailing but also in manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, government, health care and other environments.
Designed to address these needs, the new agreement with Symbol will provide IBM with access to key products within Symbol's broad range of bar code data capture and transaction processing systems, both for fixed station and portable applications.
As well as enhancing IBM's existing system solutions, the agreement will result in close cooperation in the development of future Symbol products matched against the strategic business needs of IBM customers.
Commenting on the announcement, Marius Vis, IBM European Director for the Retail and Distribution sector, said, "I welcome this innovative new agreement which will enhance IBM's ability to deliver complete solutions to our European customers. Over time, we expect to develop the relationship with a view to expanding into new business areas for IBM."
"This important agreement again confirms Symbol's technology leadership in bar code transaction processing systems," said Tomo Razmilovic, senior vice president, International Operations, Symbol Technologies. "We regard our new agreement with IBM as the basis for a strategic relationship that will be of major benefit to both organizations and our customers."
Symbol Technologies is a world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retailing, package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, manufacturing, health care and other industries.
