SYMBOL PROVIDES SCAN ENGINE FOR NEW IBM TERMINAL

BOHEMIA, N.Y., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced it is providing the Symbol LS 20 Scan Module to IBM Corporation for integration into the IBM TouchMobile(tm) System. Introduced today by IBM, TouchMobile is a hand-held data collection system that includes laser bar code scanning in portable applications.
The agreement calls for Symbol to provide the Symbol LS 20 -- a self contained, high-performance laser scan engine -- to IBM. Weighing just 2.4 ounces, the Symbol LS 20 provides IBM TouchMobile users with the incomparable accuracy of laser bar code data input with the ease of use of a "point-and-scan" non-contact device.
TouchMobile enables mobile workers to electronically capture information through bar code scanning or a touch screen at its source, such as a customer's doorstep, a loading dock or warehouse. The system, which includes an 8-by-4 inch portable data collection terminal, can be programmed for a number of different tasks to fit users' individual business needs.
"Symbol is very pleased to be a part of this new system for the mobile worker from IBM, which recognized the value of precise data input afforded by non-contact laser bar code scanning. We worked closely with IBM to provide this solution, which exemplifies the effective use of bar code-based data management in productivity tools for business," said Raymond R. Martino, president, Symbol Technologies.

The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, portable data terminals and radio frequency data communications products which are used as strategic building blocks in technology systems for retail, manufacturing package and parcel delivery, warehousing and distribution, health care and other industries.
