SYMBOL ANNOUNCES CONTRACT TO SUPPLY 9,000 HAND-HELD COMPUTERS
 TO THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE
BOHEMIA, N.Y., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Symbol Technologies Inc. (NYSE: SBL), the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems, today announced that it has been selected by the United States Postal Service to supply portable hand-held computers for its computerized route inspection program. The contract calls for Symbol to deliver up to 9,000 portable data systems to the U.S. Postal Service over a five- year period beginning in the second quarter of 1992.
The U.S. Postal Service, with more than 140,000 mail carriers throughout the United States, has route examiners that annually survey mail carrier routes to calculate and redistribute workloads. This examination process is now performed manually with pre-printed postal forms. Software in Symbol hand-held computers will enable the route examiners to capture the data required on the forms, and to transmit the results electronically to the USPS host computer system.
The five-year contract include the purchase of the PDT 3300, a programmable 16-bit DOS hand-held computer, and services for software support, training and maintenance.
"The rugged design and 16-bit DOS architecture of the PDT 3300 along with the Symbol Customer Service organization were key elements in the evaluation process," said Raymond Martino, president and chief operating officer, Symbol Technologies. "The unique versatility of the PDT 3300 terminal with capabilities such as optional integrated laser scanner and RF radio expandability allows automatic data capture far beyond the retail environment into the growing industrial marketplace as well."
Symbol Technologies, Inc. is the world leader in bar code-based data capture systems with nearly two million scanners and terminals installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar code reading equipment, hand-held computers and radio frequency data communications products that are used as strategic building blocks in data collection systems for retailing, manufacturing, distribution, transportation and many other applications.
