SYMBOL'S SPECTRUM24 CONNECTS WIRELESS LAN TO WIRED NETWORKS.

Symbol Technologies has announced several strategic agreements that enable the integration of its Spectrum24 wireless LAN voice-over-IP capabilities into corporate enterprise communications infrastructures. Based on open system standards IEEE 802.11 and ITU H.323, Spectrum24 features a 2Mbps system to support data and voice-over-IP applications through a common wireless network infrastructure. Target markets include healthcare, retail, education, logistics, hospitality, manufacturing and other industries where extended coverage and excellent interference immunity are essential.

"Our strategy for innovative, standards-based wireless networking solutions addresses the increasing needs of this expanding market, providing the best, most appropriate wireless LAN solution for a variety of applications in the corporate enterprise and vertical markets," said John Vaccaro, director of sales & marketing, wireless systems, Symbol Technologies EMEA Division. "Symbol enables organizations to realize the greatest possible value and full benefits of mobility in voice and data communications through our forward-thinking products and our alliances with other industry-leaders."

Supporting Alliances

The company is extending voice and data capabilities from the wireless LAN environment to the wired LAN, wide area network, Private Branch Exchange and Public Switched Telephone System to create an end-to-end, standards-based network. By connecting the wired and wireless networks, organizations will be able to leverage their existing network infrastructure investments while maximizing the benefits of all systems.

Additionally, Symbol is working with Mitel Corporation to integrate Mitel's H.323-compliant voice gateway nd product line with Symbol's Spectrum24 wireless LAN and network appliances.

Symbol also announced a co-marketing and technology-sharing agreement with Ericsson Enterprise Solutions surrounding Spectrum24 and Ericsson's Webswitch IP-PBX offerings, computer telephony servers, and Network Access product lines.

Symbol announced that 3Com, a provider of enterprise networking, has chosen to work with Symbol to develop and deliver Spectrum24 wireless LAN solutions based on the IEEE 802.11b draft standard for higher data rates. This new development will provide Ethernet-speed 11Mbps data rate wireless solutions to support applications that involve communications of large files such as multimedia presentations, graphics and database transfers, targeted primarily at the Corporate Enterprise & Office-LAN markets.
