SYMANTEC SHIPS TWO NEW PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS; MAKES IT EASY TO CREATE SCHEDULES FOR TIME LINE, ON TARGET & MICROSOFT PROJECT

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced Guide Line and Guide Line Maker, two new additions to its family of project management software. The products shipped Dec. 30, 1992.
"The Software Publishers Association(A) reports that project management is one of the fastest growing software categories, with sales increasing by 68 percent from 1991 to 1992," said Gene Wang, Symantec's executive vice president of applications, project management and tools. "With the introduction of Guide Line and Guide Line Maker, Symantec is providing ground-breaking technology that makes using project management software easier for this growing user base. Guide Line brings the benefits of project management to anyone who can answer a series of fill-in-the-blank questions. And our 'Buy Time Line Get Guide Line Free' offer makes project management more cost effective than ever before."
Guide Line automatically builds project schedules based on simple user input. These schedules work with any of Symantec's desktop project management packages: Time Line for Windows, Time Line 5.0 (DOS) and On Target, as well as Microsoft Project for Windows.
Guide Line Maker is an authoring system that lets users build their own project management guides, either from scratch or by importing previously created project schedules.
 Guide Line
Guide Line removes the barriers that prevented many users from taking advantage of project management software. Rather than forcing users to start from scratch by creating a list of project tasks, Guide Line presents a series of dialog boxes with questions relating to the specific type of project. These tasks can then be checked off as appropriate. Guide Line then generates a complete project schedule based on users' responses and its knowledge base. Once the project schedule is created, users can take advantage of the powerful project management functionality in Time Line and On Target. Three versions of Guide Line are available: Guide Line for Windows, Guide Line for DOS and the Guide Line License Pack which supports Microsoft Project for Windows.
Guide Line contains 16 guides including construction, office relocation, LAN installation, software development, consulting, small business start-up, market research, a marketing plan, a trade show plan and a general project plan.
 Guide Line Maker
Guide Line Maker is an authoring system that allows users to create guides. It features the Guide Programming Language, a scripting language that allows quick and easy development of guides. It provides simple editing facilities, reusable templates, visual tools that allow detailed inspection of task and local variables and report generators to produce code and data listing reports. The guides developed will run on either the DOS or Windows platform. In addition, guide distribution is royalty-free.
Guide Line Maker will also import files from Time Line 5.0 (DOS) Time Line for Windows, On Target 1.0 or Microsoft Project for Windows. This method is one of the easiest ways to create a guide and has the added advantage of transferring the logic and expertise of time-tested schedules. Guide Line Maker automatically translates the tasks and dependencies into a task outline. The author then simply adds dialogs and project variables. For example, in a documentation project, the time required to write a manual may depend on the number of pages expected.
"Guide Line Maker allows an organization to capture and disseminate its methodology for managing projects," said Steve Sherman, general manager of Symantec's project management group. "It also eliminates the need to reinvent the wheel by allowing users to build guides from time- tested schedules. This improves planning quality and reduces error.
"Symantec also recognizes that a key benefit of these products is that they tap into the talent and expertise in organizations. We encourage people to write guides for their particular industries and to share them freely. Users are invited to exchange guides over the Symantec Bulletin Board and we will soon announce some aggressive promotions designed to foster wider development," added Sherman.
 Price and Availability
Guide Line has a suggested retail price in the United States of $149.95. The U.S. suggested retail price of Guide Line Maker is $499. Both products are available immediately from Symantec and its network of authorized resellers. For a limited time, Guide Line for Windows is available free with the purchase of Time Line for Windows. Guide Line for DOS is available free with the purchase of Time Line 5.0. Users wishing to use Guide Line with Microsoft Project for Windows can do so by purchasing the Guide Line License Pack for $299 direct from Symantec.
