SYMANTEC INTRODUCES NORTON DESKTOP 2.0 FOR WINDOWS NETWORK MENUING ADMIN
PACK; CUSTOMIZED MENUS FOR NETWORK USERS, SECURITY AND CONTROL
CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today introduced The Norton Desktop 2.0 for Windows (NDW) Network Menuing Admin Pack (network pack) which provides easy customization of Windows menus for groups of users on a network. The NDW network pack gives network administrators centralized security and control over which applications can be accessed by NDW network users.
With NDW as the standard Windows interface, network-based application menus created with the NDW network pack seamlessly integrate with and enhance the user's Quick Access menuing system. The network pack also allows full use and integration with NDW's file management tools and utilities.
"As groupware becomes more prevalent in the corporate computing environment, it is important that our utilities products are more network aware," said Rod Turner, Symantec's executive vice president of the Peter Norton Group. "The NDW network pack is a step in that direction."
 Standard Network Group Menus
Users have access to different programs on the network based on application menus created by the administrator. Common sets of menus for different groups of network users can be set up within the standard NDW interface and seamlessly integrate with it. Users can access group menus that allow entry to applications on the network and any personal menus.
 Centralized Security and Control
The network administrator can restrict user access to programs on the network and secure network applications from unauthorized use. Menu rights are assigned on existing user network rights and administrators have centralized control of network application menus.
The NDW network pack provides an end-user interface solution for corporate standardization. The network pack lets network managers maintain standards for security and data protection, while allowing for individual preferences and giving the user a more convenient way to use applications on the network.
 Increased User Productivity
With NDW as the standard Windows interface, users have access to personal menus as well as network-based application menus. Menus can be nested (a top-level Program Menu could contain a Windows Program and DOS Program sub-menus), allowing a customized environment designed for the way individual users work.
With easily accessible menus, users are insulated from the complexity of finding and running applications on the network. The user can transparently load and run network applications, thereby enjoying an increased productivity advantage.
Easy Menu Set-Up with Administrator's Mode
With the password protected administrators' module, network managers can easily create customized application menus for network users. All menu setup is done within the standard NDW interface, and also provides hot key access from within NDW. Network managers can easily assign menu rights via simple list-boxes.
 Pricing and Availability
The NDW network pack is available at a suggested retail price of $295 per server. It requires The Norton Desktop 2.0 for Windows for each network user, Windows 3.x, Novell Netware Version 2.15 or higher, LAN Manager Enhanced Version 2.0 or higher, and 300K of free disk space for installation.
The network pack and site licenses for The Norton Desktop 2.0 for Windows are available through Symantec's sales organization, or through the following Symantec corporate resellers: Egghead Corporate; Corporate Software; 800 Software; Multiple Zones; Software Spectrum; and SoftMart.
