 SYMANTEC CORP. ACQUIRES CERTUS
Industry-Leading Systems Security and Antivirus Developer
Will Enhance Symantec Technology Leadership in Utilities Market
CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) announced today that it has signed an agreement for the acquisition of Certus International Corp. Certus is the developer of NOVI, an award-winning antivirus product that prevents, detects and repairs viruses on DOS-based PCs and the Certus product, a leading PC systems security product for DOS-based PCs.
The acquisition will provide Symantec with immediate entry into the PC systems security market and complements Symantec's efforts in virus protection product development. Symantec's family of utility products includes Norton Utilities, Norton Backup and Norton AntiVirus. These products are the market leaders in a variety of technology areas including data backup, hard-disk maintenance, recovery and repair, and virus protection. Certus, an industry leader in PC systems security and antivirus software, is now in its fourth-generation with the product NOVI.

"The Certus technology will assist us in the development of the industry's most comprehensive antivirus solution and it marks our entry into the systems security market."
"As the security and antivirus markets grow, Symantec continues to be a leader in recognizing that technology is one piece of an MIS security solution," said Peter Tippett, chairman and founder of Certus. "Our technology, in combination with the Norton technology and Symantec's industry leading service and support programs, will ensure customers have the latest and most advanced solution to prevent lost or stolen data."
The acquisition is a pooling of interest in which Certus will merge into Symantec in exchange for between 394,000 to 533,000 shares of its common outstanding stock.
Certus is headquartered in Cleveland. The Certus staff will report to the Symantec Peter Norton Group located in Santa Monica, Calif. Major shareholders include Peter Tippett, chairman; Clarion Capital; Belvoir Capital; and Martin Leibowitz, chief executive officer.
