SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES VERSION 2.0 OF THINK REFERENCE; GIVES PROGRAMMERS COMPLETE, INSTANT ACCESS TO 'INSIDE MACINTOSH'
CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced version 2.0 of THINK(TM) Reference, an on-line reference tool for Macintosh programmers that puts all the information from "Inside Macintosh" at programmers' fingertips. Version 2.0 saves time and effort locating the information needed to program the Macintosh efficiently, and offers several new tools that go beyond "Inside Macintosh." "Inside Macintosh" is a crucial programmers' guide to Macintosh toolbox routines by Apple Computer Inc. The printed version spans six volumes that consist of more than 4,000 pages. Version 2.0 of THINK Reference automates access of all this information including the new features in System 7.0. In addition, version 2.0 includes additional Macintosh technical notes, programmers' tips and code examples written by Symantec programmers not available in "Inside Macintosh." "THINK Reference 2.0 replaces a mountain of printed documentation," said Carol Clettenberg, Symantec's director of development tools. "Moreover, it offers valuable information that goes beyond the scope of 'Inside Macintosh' and lets programmers more efficiently find and incorporate that information into their programs. And since all of this information is on-line, programmers can take a portable computer anywhere and still have complete reference information at their fingertips. It's really indispensable for anyone programming the Macintosh." THINK Reference version 2.0 works independently as a separate program. It is also compatible with Symantec's THINK C and THINK Pascal programming languages and other development environments such as Apple's Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW). New Features THINK Reference version 2.0 now supports Volume VI of "Inside Macintosh." Volume VI incudes all of the new information needed to take advantage of the features found in System 7.0 including AppleTalk, Slot Manager, Sound Manager and Apple Events. Version 2.0 of THINK Reference also allows users to cut and paste code examples and toolbox function templates. This feature lets users take code samples from on-line documents and paste them directly into the program, eliminating the hassle of retyping as well as transcription mistakes. Several new features are designed to make technical information more accessible. For example, version 2.0 allows instant access to any page in the database. As characters are typed, THINK Reference automatically searches the databases for words that match. Information is hyperlinked to allow easy movement around related topics. Detailed information on toolbox routines, declarations from "Inside Macintosh" and Macintosh Technical Notes, Symantec programmer tips, and code examples that go beyond "Inside Macintosh" are all included. Informative graphics and overview sections help illustrate key concepts. New features of version 2.0 also save disk space. Users can now install just those portions of reference information that are needed, eliminating the need to load unneeded volumes of data that require precious disk space. Price and Availability The U.S. suggested retail price of THINK Reference Version 2.0 is $129, compared to a suggested retail price of $140 for "Inside Macintosh". Registered end-users in the United States can upgrade for $39. In addition, registered end-users in the United States who purchased version 1.0 of THINK Reference on or after Nov. 4, 1992, will receive a free upgrade to version 2.0, subject to a shipping and handling charge of $8.
