SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES THE NORTON ESSENTIALS FOR POWERBOOK VERSION 1.1; THE ESSENTIAL UTILITY PACKAGE FOR THE MACINTOSH POWERBOOK

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced The Norton Essentials for PowerBook version 1.1, a suite of utilities designed to enhance Macintosh PowerBook performance by increasing battery life, enhancing productivity and useability, keeping files synchronized, and providing battery gauge compatibility for the PowerBook 180C, 145B and 165C.
 KEY FEATURES OVERVIEW
-- Extends life of battery charge an average of 40 percent or more
 -- SyncIt! instantly synchronizes files
-- Enhances PowerBook productivity and useability
-- Automatically disable/reconnect AppleTalk with Instant Access
-- Now compatible with the PowerBook 180C, 145B and 165C
"Battery life is the biggest concern for PowerBook users," said Grant Johnson, Symantec's business unit director for the Peter Norton Group. "In response to Apple's release of two new PowerBook models (the 180C and the 145B), Symantec is providing an update to The Norton Essentials for PowerBook to ensure battery management compatibility."
 Increase Battery Life
The Norton Essentials for PowerBook 1.1 (NEP 1.1) enables PowerBook users to tailor battery usage to different power conditions with features such as Backlight Dimmer, Battery Saver and Instant Access for AppleTalk.
Backlight Dimmer reduces unnecessary power drain by automatically dimming the screen backlight after a user-specified interval of inactivity. The backlight can also be dimmed instantly by typing a chosen keystroke.
Battery Saver maximizes battery life by automatically adjusting power usage according to current battery strength and the active application. NEP 1.1 is preconfigured with Battery Saver settings for many widely used applications and allows the user to add new settings for any additional applications.
Having AppleTalk active on a PowerBook when not connected to a network drains battery life unnecessarily. Instant Access for AppleTalk monitors the network port and automatically disables AppleTalk when the user disconnects from the network. When the user reconnects to the network, Instant Access reactivates AppleTalk and re-establishes network services. Instant Access for AppleTalk saves battery life by remounting remote volumes automatically without the need to restart the PowerBook.
 Instantly Synchronize Files
NEP 1.1 simplifies the task of ensuring that the most recent files are on both a PowerBook and other remote volumes with the file synchronizing function SyncIt!. SyncIt! automatically updates and reconciles files between a PowerBook and other Macintosh computers to guarantee that users have the latest copy of their work. SyncIt! also provides special control over folders containing aliased items, with a special default option that prevents users from copying unresolved aliases instead of actual files.
 Enhance Powerbook Productivity and Useability
The Norton Essentials for PowerBook 1.1 increases the flexibility of a PowerBook by providing a collection of utilities to make the PowerBook easier to use and more productive and secure. Power Cursor resolves the problem of poor cursor visibility by offering a choice of larger, easier to find cursors to replace the five standard Macintosh cursors. Caps Lock Control prevents accidentally engaging Caps Lock by allowing users to customize the method with which Caps Lock is turned on and off. Power Guard provides customizable password protection to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive and confidential information stored on a PowerBook.
 Pricing and Availability
The Norton Essentials for PowerBook version 1.1 is available at a suggested retail price of $129. Registered users will receive a free upgrade automatically. Non-registered users can obtain a free upgrade by calling Symantec Customer Service at 800-441-7234. The Norton Essentials for PowerBook version 1.1 runs on any Macintosh PowerBook and PowerBook Duo and requires System 7.0 or higher.
