"Norton Backup 3.0 for Windows is an expansive product that offers full backup protection through an implementation of key features designed for ease-of-use, reliability and security," said Ken Felderstein, Symantec Peter Norton Group business unit director. "The program also offers total flexibility with backup storage options -- working flawlessly with all popular backup devices currently available as well as alternative technologies users are likely to select in the future."
DOS 6.0 Support and Upgrade Incentives
Since DOS 6.0 includes a subset of Symantec's Norton Backup technology, users will find significant advantages with the full protection found in Norton Backup 3.0 for Windows. Norton Backup performs Direct Memory Access (DMA) backups which consistently result in backup routines two to four times faster than DOS 6.0. In addition, Norton Backup offers users the option to complete automatic backups, scheduled backups or unattended backups as well as full support for high-speed tape controllers, SCSI and QIC-02 tape drives.
"The Norton Backup 3.0 for Windows is the only fast, compatible backup solution for DOS 6.0 users and non-users alike," added Felderstein. "A large portion of DOS 6.0 users will upgrade to Norton Backup because of the full protection not found in other current product offerings nor DOS 6.0 backup itself."
 Easy to Use
The Norton Backup installs instantly, automatically recognizing the user system configuration and backup devices. Users have the option to select three different interfaces: Step-by-Step, Advanced and Preset depending on the desired level of interaction and customization of the back-up. The program's exclusive Step-by-Step interface walks the user through the steps of backing up quickly and efficiently by reducing the backup process to four easy steps: selection, destination, method of backup and launch. The Advanced interface is reserved for more sophisticated users while the Preset interface offers routines for popular applications such as Lotus 1-2-3, dBASE, Microsoft Word and Excel as well as WordPerfect. In addition, a new interactive context- sensitive help system is available with point and click help access throughout all three interfaces.
Valuable time can be saved by taking advantage of Norton Backup's customization features. The Norton Backup Scheduler automatically runs attended or unattended backups as determined by the user. In addition custom file selections and backup options can be assigned to easy-to- remember names for frequently conducted routines as well as the ability to access a range of backup types including full, incremental and differential.
 Most Extensive Device Support
The Norton Backup for Windows supports more devices than any previous version including the option to backup to tape devices, network drives, hard disks or any DOS device. The extensive list of backup devices includes SCSI, QIC-02, IDE and Irwin AccuTrak as well as high- speed tape controller cards. Norton Backup offers support for 2.88 MB floppy disks, STAC compression and the Microsoft Real-time Compression Interface (MRCI). The programs supports 100 percent Windows compatible networks, including Novell NetWare, LAN Manager, LANtastic and Windows for Workgroups.
 Network Backup
The Norton Backup features the ability to backup to any workstation tape device on a Novell NetWare LAN as well as the ability to backup to network file servers. The program supports Novell NetWare 2.x and 3.x offering the ability to backup and restore Novell NetWare Bindery information and Extended File Attributes. The user can backup multiple drives in a single session and create automatic backups to a central tape device. Norton Backup ensures security with password protection and DES data encryption.
 Safe, Reliable Backup
The Norton Backup is the safest and most reliable backup product available. The program checks for media defects prior to backing up, compares data to the original after backing up and can even restore data from damaged backup disks that other programs are unable to read. The emergency DOS restore feature save users time by restoring Windows backup sets without first re-installing Windows. Additional restore options include a quick single file restore, the ability to restore to different directories or drives, and the ability to
restore data even if some diskettes are missing or damaged. Norton Backup for Windows offers cross-compatibility and can restore diskettes created by The Norton Backup for DOS as well DOS 6.0 backup disks.
