SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES THE NORTON BACKUP 2.0 FOR DOS
Automatic Backups for Every PC User
CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced The Norton Backup version 2.0 for DOS with support for industry standard quarter-inch (QIC 40/80) tape devices. The Norton Backup is the most automated backup software on the market, making backup practically effortless for all levels of PC users. It includes tape support, a backup Scheduler and the Backup Assistant, which automatically implements daily backup. Users can schedule automatic unattended backups to tape devices, network servers, local disk drives or any other DOS device.
The Norton Backup supports the needs of MIS and PC support managers with a Preset option, password protection, and DOS and Windows interoperability. The product offers unsurpassed Novell network support by offering several options for backing up a file when a file is in use by the network operating system during a network backup.
"PC users recognize the value of data and the market for backup is expanding," said Gordon E. Eubanks, Jr., president and CEO. "The automatic features in The Norton Backup increase the probability of regular backup for the 97 percent of users who don't backup."
 Key Features Automatic Backup Scheduler
Users can schedule unattended or attended backups to tape, floppy and hard drives and network servers. During installation, The Backup Assistant gives the novice user the option to automatically setup scheduled backups without learning the software. Tape Support
The product supports, has been tested, and certified for the following industry standard QIC 40/80 (Quarter Inch Committee) tape drives -- Alloy, Archive, Colorado Memory Systems, Core, Irwin SX, Mountain, Tallgrass, Tecmar and Wangtek. Corporate Backup
MIS/PC coordinators can easily create and distribute backup setup files to be run in a special Preset level, which lists the setup files in a simple menu. The Norton Backup offers DOS and Windows cross- platform support with completely interchangeable DOS and Windows backup sets. Password Protection
Users can set password protection to prevent unauthorized access to The Norton Backup so that only the authorized user can restore data. Additional Features Reliability
The Norton Backup is the safest and most reliable backup program, offering advanced error protection code (ECC), which makes it up to four times more reliable than any other backup product and allows it to restore from even badly damaged diskettes. It rejects bad floppy diskettes and detects corrupted files during backup. Speed
"PC Magazine" rated The Norton Backup the fastest backup program on the market. It performs high speed DMA backups at speeds up to 5.5 MB per minute. Pricing and Availability
The Norton Backup for DOS Version 2.0 is available at a suggested retail price of $129. Upgrades to registered users are available for $39. It runs on IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 and 100 percent compatibles and requires DOS 3.1 or higher with 512K RAM.
The Norton Backup version 1.2 for Windows is still available as a separate product and is packaged with a bonus copy of Norton Backup version 1.2 for DOS. Customers who purchase Norton Backup 1.2 for DOS and Windows on or after Dec. 24, 1991 can receive a free upgrade to Norton Backup version 2.0 for DOS by providing a dated proof of purchase to Symantec Customer Service (800-441-7234).
