SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES NORTON DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS
 LEVERAGES WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS
CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced its award-winning Norton Desktop 2.0 for Windows (NDW) will leverage and build new features that take advantage of Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups (WFW) capabilities. NDW will take advantage of the groupware features WFW provides and support the MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) which will enable it to send mail and files from the desktop to other PCs in the workgroup.
"It is important that our utilities support the leading network environments," said Rod Turner, Symantec's executive vice president of the Peter Norton Group. "NDW, with Windows for Workgroups, will help corporate users build their own customized workgroup systems."
An NDW Mail tool on the desktop allows the user to drag and drop a file from a drive window or group window to the Mail tool. With a mail-enabled desktop, a user can send a file without opening its application, and has the added benefit of being able to send documents from applications that are not yet mail-enabled.
Besides providing a mail-enabled desktop, Symantec is adding mail-enabling to DeskEdit (NDW's built-in text editor), Batch Runner, Norton Disk Doctor, System Information and Norton AntiVirus utilities included with NDW.
NDW will provide peer-to-peer file management that will allow users to share files and data using NDW as the shell. Symantec will also add support for extended network attributes, network specific information about files, within NDW's file manager.
The Norton Desktop for Windows with support for Windows for Workgroups will be available this quarter at a suggested retail price of $179.
