SYMANTEC ANNOUNCES NORTON ANTIVIRUS 2.1 FOR DOS, WINDOWS; COMPREHENSIVE
VIRUS PROTECTION, FULL NETWORK SUPPORT, NEW SUPPORT SERVICES
CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the company's commitment to improve data integrity and safe computing, Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced The Norton AntiVirus(TM) 2.1 for DOS and Windows, updated virus protection for today's computing environment. New features in version 2.1 include detection of more than 1,400 known viruses, increased network functionality, detection of 100 percent of the NCSA (National Computer Security Association) virus library, detection of Mutation Engine viruses, Windows Background Scanning and a Windows Scheduler.
The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 includes complete DOS and Windows applications in one integrated package, providing visual and audible virus alert messages in any DOS or Windows application. Scanning speed is now up to 40 percent faster, and systems can be scanned for viruses in either DOS or Windows. Norton AntiVirus 2.1 includes a new Windows scheduling program that allows attended or unattended virus scans anytime in the background, using as little as 1.5K of RAM.
"We have significantly updated The Norton AntiVirus program to reflect the needs of today's computer users who require more from their antivirus package," said Rod Turner, executive vice president of Symantec's Peter Norton Group. "Version 2.1 provides enhanced network support, updated detection features and Symantec's new support services, each designed to provide the additional protection needed by all of our corporate- and end-user customers."
 Increased Network Functionality
Norton AntiVirus 2.1 offers one-step installation, software upgrades and virus definition updates from a central node to all network workstations, allowing an administrator to easily and automatically maintain up-to-date virus protection for an entire site. The program, and all antivirus definition updates, can be installed automatically on the workstations as users log in to the network. The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 supports Novell NetWare 286 and 386, 3Com 3plusOpen, OS/2 LAN Manager, AT&T Starlan and Banyan Vines.
The program also broadcasts virus-related alert messages to and from local and central nodes to track virus-related activity, and can require a user to log off the network if Norton AntiVirus Intercept is not loaded on the user's workstation. Norton AntiVirus 2.1 scans network drives for viruses, and prevents viruses from being launched, copied or moved across a network. These network enhancements and an administrator's guide -- "Using Norton AntiVirus Network Manager" -- enable MIS managers to keep virus protection current across all workstations with a minimum of effort and cost.
 Virus Detection Features
In addition to detecting over 1,400 known viruses, including the viruses contained in the NCSA Library, The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 detects unknown viruses by monitoring suspicious disk activity that could signal the work of an unknown virus. This encompasses the new class of "undetectable" polymorphic viruses (viruses that change each time they infect a system), including the particularly virulent Mutation Engine.
The Mutation Engine is a set of virus-creating tools that can be used to spread an infinite number of viruses across any computer platform. When tested against the Mutation Engine in Symantec AntiVirus Lab tests, The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 detected 100 percent of the 900,000 mutations created.
 The Corporate Support Program
The new Corporate Support Program is designed to provide comprehensive and targeted educational and technical services for corporate customers. The program includes monthly virus definition updates, all software upgrades, an educational virus awareness kit, The Norton Report newsletter, a rapid virus response team and an extended- hours, toll-free technical support number.
 AntiVirus Support Services
Symantec offers a set of support services that creates the most comprehensive antivirus solution available for corporate- and end-user customers. In addition to the Corporate Support Program, the new services include The Symantec AntiVirus Update Service (SAV-U), a quarterly virus definition subscription service available for an annual fee of $69 by calling 800-428-6800.
These programs fit into Symantec's portfolio of existing antivirus support services, which include: The Virus Newsline, 310-828-2906; a 24-Hour Virus Faxline, 310-575-5018; down-loadable virus definitions from CompuServe and the Symantec BBS, 408-973-9598 (2400 baud) or 408-973-9834 (9600 baud); and, a monthly Virus Definition Disk Service, 800-343-4714, ext. 756. Virus information is also available from Symantec's FAX Retrieval Service, 800-554-4403, under the Technical Application Notes Directory.
 Pricing and Availability
The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 is available at a suggested retail price of $129. Upgrades are available for $19, plus $8 shipping and handling, and are free with a SAV-U subscription order (offer expires Dec. 31) to registered customers of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Desktop(TM) for Windows and Norton Desktop for DOS.
Version 2.1's advanced detection technology is required in order to incorporate all future Symantec virus definition updates and protect against the Mutation Engine. Norton AntiVirus 2.1 runs on IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 and 100-percent compatibles, and requires DOS 3.1 or higher with 512K RAM. The Norton AntiVirus 2.1 is compatible with Windows 3.x.
