SYMANTEC ACQUIRES CONTACT SOFTWARE INTERNATIONAL; ESTABLISHES CONTACT MANAGEMENT GROUP TO MARKET INDUSTRY-LEADING CONTACT MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Contact Software International Inc., the developer and marketer of ACT!, the leading contact management software package. Contact Software International expands Symantec's market reach into the fast-growing sales productivity and mobile professional markets. In conjunction with the acquisition, Symantec is forming the contact management group, which will report to Patrick M. Sullivan, vice president and general manager of the group, and former president and chief executive officer of Contact Software International.
Contact Software International is the number-one provider of contact management software -- software for building, managing and maintaining relationships. Its user base is predominantly sales and service professionals and high-level executives who need an easy and convenient method of keeping track of a large number of contacts. Contact Software International has shipped more than 500,000 units of its award-winning multiplatform product line and controls more than half of the contact management software market. Symantec will leverage its strong U.S. and international sales, marketing and distribution channels to expand the market share for the Contact Software International ACT! family.
"With the increased accessibility to network and portable computing technology, sales and service professionals are looking for tools that will increase their productivity and help them be more cost-effective and efficient," said Gordon E. Eubanks, Symantec's president and chief executive officer. "We see a large opportunity to provide productivity solutions for these professionals that give them a competitive advantage in the marketplace."
"Symantec has the global resources to exponentially expand the market for ACT!," said Sullivan. "The numbers are right for high growth -- in the United States alone, 14 million individuals are involved in sales, 5.9 million laptops are installed, and there is an expected 16-percent annual growth in computer automation for the small business segment. The merger of resources between Symantec and Contact Software International opens up some very exciting possibilities."
ACT! runs on DOS, MS Windows, Macintosh and the palmtop HP95LX computers, fitting into Symantec's strategy to provide cross-platform software solutions.
The acquisition of Contact Software International is a pooling of interests in which Symantec will issue approximately 3 million shares of its common stock for the current outstanding shares of Contact Software International.
The contact management group will report to Gene Wang, Symantec's executive vice president of productivity applications, project management and tools.
