SYKONNECT EXPANDS GIGABIT ETHERNET SERVER ADAPTER FAMILY.

SyKonnect, a manufacturer of high-end server network interface cards for strategic network links, has developed the 1000Base-T based Gigabit Ethernet server adapters. This expansion of the SK-NET GE family of Gigabit Ethernet server NICs will allow the deployment of Gigabit Ethernet into the large base of Cat 5 UTP cabling that is installed in most buildings today. The server adapters are developed according to the 802.3ab specification that will enable Gigabit Ethernet to operate over distances of up to 100m using four pairs of Category 5 balanced copper wiring. Today the IEEE 802.3ab draft standard is nearing completion. SysKonnect plans to enter volume shipment of 1000Base-T based products with the expected ratification of the standard in Q3/1999.

With the addition of copper based versions to the SK-NET GE product line, this family of Gigabit Ethernet server adapters broadens to six different products supporting 1000Base-SX, 1000Base-LX, and 1000Base-T. Included are the first 64bit/66MHz Gigabit Ethernet server NICs with two ports on one card, enabling users to connect their strategic servers with redundant links to the same, or separate, network switches.

SysKonnect's Redundant Link Management Technology enables failsafe configurations that are equivalent to the redundant connections of FDDI where Dual Homing was first introduced.

Also compatible with today's 32bit/33MHz bus systems, the heart of these new adapters is a SysKonnect developed ASIC, the connection between the network and the PCI bus. This allows SK-NET GE adapters to greatly reduce server CPU utilization and pass network traffic across the bus at full PCI bus bandwidth.

In addition to the available single port versions, the SK-NET GE family of server NICs includes products with a two-port per board design. Supporting both fail-over redundancy and dual homing on one adapter means users are no longer forced to purchase and install a second adapter in each server to get the reliability and redundancy they need. Until today, a redundant Gigabit LAN connection has required the use of a second PCI bus slot, often unavailable in critical servers. Unlike other redundancy schemes for Gigabit Ethernet, the SysKonnect solution is completely independent of the host operating system, protocols used, or the brand of server.

"SysKonnect customers rely on our adapters for high performance, as well as high availability." said Bernd Koch, SysKonnect's chairman and chief executive officer. "For us, high performance means reducing CPU utilization while maximizing network throughput. This is achieved by calculating TCP, UDP and IP checksums on the adapter and through the use of SysKonnect's PacedPacketBatch technology which moderates bus interrupt rates and reduces latency, even under full network loads."

The SK-NET GE product line is PCI Hot Plug compatible, and is supplied with a number of other advanced server NIC features like Vital Product Data, VLAN support, as well as SNMP and Remote Monitoring for network management. Additionally, both single and dual link versions support Quality of Service and Class of Service through the use of sophisticated hardware based data prioritization which includes a second transmit path through the adapter.

About the SK-NET GE Family

The SK-NET GE family consists of standard-based, 64bit/66MHz Gigabit Ethernet server NICs. Today dual link and single link models are available for SX and LX connections. In addition, SysKonnect will ship in Q3/99 dual link and single link adapters for 1000Base-T. All adapter types use the same high throughput, 64 bit wide, adapter architecture. Dual port SK-NET GE NICs monitor a variety of physical link conditions and network protocols enabling it to look beyond the first switch interface to ensure server connectivity in the event of a network failure. Additionally, the family of adapters is fully backward-compatible with 32bit/33MHz or 64bit/66MHz PCI bus based servers, auto-sensing the right configuration upon installation. Customers can use the SK-NET GE to improve the performance of existing equipment, thus extending the life of server investments as they upgrade the network infrastructure to include Gigabit Ethernet.

Pricing and availability

The SK-NET GE family of server NICs is available through SysKonnect's world-wide distribution channels. Suggested retail price for individual cards starts at (US) $1,095.00 for the single link SX, and (US) $1,595.00 for dual link SX models.
