SWISS PARLIAMENT VOTES IN FAVOR TO PURCHASE 34 HORNET FIGHTERS
ST. LOUIS, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The upper house of the Swiss Parliament, the Staenderat, voted 33-8 Thursday in favor of a $2.3 billion acquisition bill to purchase 34 F/A-18 Hornet fighters from the United States.
The bill now moves to the larger lower house, the Nationalrat, which convenes in June. Under the program's timetable, McDonnell Douglas Corp. (NYSE: MD), which manufactures the Hornet at its St. Louis facilities, would deliver the first two aircraft in early 1995.
After an extensive evaluation involving several aircraft, the Swiss Military Department chose the F/A-18 Hornet in 1988 over the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, the Swedish JAS-39 Gripen and the French Mirage 2000-5. In 1990, the Swiss reopened the competition to consider the F/A-18 and the Mirage 2000-5 only. In June 1991, the Swiss Federal Council reaffirmed the previous selection of the Hornet. The council then submitted the acquisition bill to parliament in December 1991.
The bill for the Swiss New Fighter Aircraft calls for the procurement of 26 single-seat F/A-18C models and eight two-seat F/A-18D models. The Swiss Air Force plans to employ the F/A-18 Hornet in an air interceptor role.
There are 1,080 F/A-18s in service worldwide with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and the air forces of Canada, Australia, Spain and Kuwait. Deliveries of 40 Hornets to Kuwait began in January 1992 and will continue through September 1993.
