SWEET SUE KITCHENS ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY RECALL
OF 'MIXING CHICKEN IN BROTH' IN TEXAS AND GEORGIA
ATHENS, Ala., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sweet Sue Kitchens today announced that it has voluntarily recalled 281 cases of (2,100 pounds) of Sweet Sue "Mixing Chicken in Broth" after several swollen cans were discovered in a batch produced on Sept. 11, 1992.
The company said the 281 cases, each containing 24 five-ounce cans, were distributed to one warehouse in Atlanta and another in San Antonio. The cans bear the code number 2CM255, which is printed on the bottom of all cans.
Consumers should check the codes on the cans and return those marked 2CM255 to their local retailer for refunds or replacements. Only five-ounce cans of Sweet Sue "Mixing Chicken in Broth" bearing the 2CM255 code are subject to the recall.
No instances of illness have been reported.
The recalled product was sold by Kroger stores in the Atlanta area and by grocery and convenience stores in San Antonio and southwest Texas.
The problem was discovered after the company noticed several swollen cans from one day's production that may have been improperly processed. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said that "although only some of the product was affected by the improper processing, the company is recalling the entire day's production in order to ensure public safety."
Consumers may notice a strong odor when they open the improperly processed cans.
Sweet Sue Kitchens has advised affected grocers and distributors in Texas and Atlanta to remove and return any five-ounce cans from the recalled batch.
Other products produced by Sweet Sue Kitchens and other batches of Sweet Sue "Mixing Chicken in Broth" produced on other dates are not involved in the recall.
Consumers who have additional questions should contact their local food retailer or call the Sweet Sue Kitchens Consumer Helpline at 800-247-8339. Consumers will receive refunds or replacement product by returning the recalled cans to their local retailers.
