SWEET 16 FOR DEISE IN LAOIS WIN.

Byline: COILIN DUFFY

LAOIS 1-15

WATERFORD 4-22 Allianz NHL Division 1B

PATRICK CURRAN and Thomas Ryan bagged two goals each for Waterford in their 16-point win in Portlaoise yesterday.

Laois ended the tie with 14 men following a red card for half-time substitute Lee Cleere just moments into the second half, after an off-the-ball incident with Ryan.

A solid first half display was key to this Deise win and by half-time Waterford were 2-12 to 0-5 clear. Despite Laois's numerical disadvantage, and Bennett firing three scores, the hosts fought back.

Four Mark Kavanagh efforts and a Neil Foyle point ensured Laois pegged it back to 11 points on a 2-16 to 0-11 scoreline, but this was as good as it got. Laois were accurate and Waterford poor in front of the posts during this spell - with the Deise registering seven wides, but they quickly returned to form.

Ryan came back into his own before Curran added his second goal.

Laois produced an excellent response as Kavanagh found the net, but Waterford drove on.
