SWEDISH HOSPITAL BOARD ANNOUNCES INTENT TO MERGE WITH BALLARD
SEATTLE, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of trustees of Swedish Hospital Medical Center announced it voted last night to merge with Ballard Community Hospital. The board of directors of the Ballard facility approved the merger in a December vote.
"This merger is going to allow both hospitals to provide a more extensive and cost-effective range of health-care services to the community. We're looking forward to being an integral part of Seattle's largest health care team," Douglas Bruce, administrator at Ballard, said.
"Both hospitals share a commitment to the highest quality care. With this merger, we can address one of the most pressing issues in the health-care industry today -- controlling costs," Dr. Brian Goodell, executive director of Swedish said.
While both facilities are financially sound, they expect to benefit from having lower administrative costs and the ability to better plan for health-care services in the central and Ballard service areas. Services currently offered by the two facilities complement each other and, when combined, will provide a more comprehensive range of health care services than currently provided by either facility.
Swedish, located on First Hill, has about 3,700 employees and is licensed for 697 beds; Ballard employs 750 people and has 163 beds. Both administrators said no layoffs are planned and hope any necessary staff reductions will be through normal attrition. Both campuses will remain fully operational.
Under the terms of the agreement, Goodell will lead the new structure and Bruce will continue to manage the Ballard facility, reporting to Goodell.
The merger is contingent upon approval by state and federal agencies. If approved, the merger is expected to be in effect by this summer.
