SWEDES TO RUN RAILWAYS.

A Swedish company, Hifab International AB, has taken over management of the parastatal Zambia Railways Ltd., after years of negotiations with the Zambian government on how best to restructure the declining railway line.

Zambia's Communications and Transport Minister Anoshi Chipawa says that the Hifab International AB takeover of Zambia Railways comes after an intensely competitive bidding system involving several companies based in Sweden. He says the Zambian government wants to see the Swedish firm enhance the railway's efficiency and freight handling capacity, which has deteriorated considerably, mainly due to the decline of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM).
