SURVEY UNCOVERS 1992'S TOP MAALOX MOMENTS(TM) IN AMERICA

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- 1992 was a year full of memorable situations and events -- the presidential election, the L.A. riots, hurricane Andrew, famine in Somalia, and even the break-up of Charles and Diana.
But what about the many Maalox Moments(TM) experienced every day by Americans across the country? What common situations in 1992 seemed to trigger acid indigestion and heartburn most often in the stomachs of adults?
According to a recent survey of more than 1,000 people, conducted by Opinion Research Corporation of Princeton, N.J., 1992's most memorable Maalox Moment for 20 percent of the respondents was "losing a job."
The aggravating influence that took second place on the list of memorable Maalox Moments (with 16 percent of the vote) was the ubiquitous "discovery of an unfaithful companion or spouse" -- news that wrenched the stomachs of folks from all walks of life, including commoners and kings.
And the memorable Maalox Moment that received the third largest vote was a predictable seasonal pass-time: "holiday over-indulgence."
Several other common situations also were recognized as sources of Maalox Moments for many Americans. The greatest proportion of respondents -- 44 percent -- said that getting ticketed for speeding in 1992 was aggravating to their stomachs.
About two out of very five (39 percent) also found that bouncing a check and experiencing a "super hot buritto repeat-o" commonly lead to that familiar burning sensation in their stomachs and chests.
"It's no secret that 1992 was a challenging year for many people," said James Barickman, category development director, Maalox(R), for Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals Inc. "Maalox Moments relating to both food and stress were a major part of daily life, but people persevered.
"Many of these situations probably won't change in 1993," Barickman continued, "Everyday challenges will still trigger acid indigestion and heartburn. However, Americans are looking forward to a brighter year ahead and Maalox is there behind them 100 percent."
Other survey findings include the fact that getting caught in traffic causes stomach problems for about one out of every three Americans, as does suffering the "pizza-with-the-works penalty" and gobbling fast food on the run.
Apparently, younger people are more likely to say they get an upset stomach when caught in some of these circumstances. For example, more than one-third of those between the ages of 18 and 34 said that getting caught in traffic caused them a great deal of stomach aggravation, compared to only 24 percent of individuals 55 years of age and older who felt the same way.
Another major Maalox Moment for many adult Americans (29 percent) in 1992 -- having a credit card rejected.
The 1992 Maalox Moments Survey was sponsored by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals Inc., maker of the Maalox line of antacids. Telephone interviewing of a nationally representative sample of 1,007 adults, 18 years of age or older, took place on Dec. 23, 26 and 27, 1992.
