SURVEY OF CEO'S NAMES THOMAS C. ZAY SOUTHEAST'S TOP EXECUTIVE SEARCH
    CONSULTANT
ATLANTA, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas C. Zay, president of Atlanta- based Zay & Company Inc., has been recognized as the top retained executive search consultant in the Southeast in a survey of chief executives at the nation's largest public and private companies, hospitals, trade associations, universities and government agencies.
Zay was ranked 18th in the all-important general management category, which involves filling the most senior executive positions in corporations. He was the only Southeastern executive search consultant to make the top 20.
The findings were published in the 1992 edition of The Career Makers, a book that identifies North America's top 150 career powerbrokers and ranks them in functional and industry categories.
In other executive management functions, Zay was listed among the top 10 search specialists in filling senior-level positions in human resources, sales/marketing, merchandising and advertising/promotion.
In industry categories, Zay was ranked No. 1 in construction/engineering, No. 2 in textiles/apparel, and in the top 10 in communications/telecommunications, retailing and food/related products.
Author John Sibbald surveyed chief executive officers or their equivalents with Fortune 1,000 companies, Forbes 500 largest U.S. private companies and other large institutions that regularly use the services of retained executive search professionals. Names included in the survey were nominated by both industry peers and clients.
The book identifies "the individual recruiters most worth knowing; the most effective and reputable recruiters."
The 150 executive search consultants cited in the book represent the top 1 percent in the industry in North America. Noting that the group averages more than 20 years in the recruiting field, Sibbald writes, "It clearly takes many years to build up the relationships, credibility and reputation to make it to the top 1 percent."
As one of the top 20 in the general management category, Zay shares the spotlight with such executive search notables as Gerry Roche of Heidrick & Struggles, Inc., New York; Win Priem of Korn/Ferry International, New York; and Tom Neff of SpencerStuart, New York.
Zay founded his firm in 1982, following a career of more than 20 years in professional search consulting organizations. Zay & Company has a professional staff of six senior-level consultants.
The book cites several of Zay's significant placements, including the president and chief executive officer of National Service Industries, Inc.; the president and chief operating officer of VF Corporation; the president and chief executive officer of Blount Inc.; and the senior vice president - worldwide marketing for Holiday Inns Worldwide/Bass PLC.
