SURGING IMPORTS OF SPECIALTY STEEL

WASHINGTON, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- "For the fifth month this year, specialty steel imports surged far above historical levels," Robert E. Heaton, chairman of the Specialty Steel Industry of the United States (SSIUS), said today. "Dumping, government subsidies and other unfair trade practices continue. Clearly, foreign interests are targeting imports toward specialty steels where the recent basic steel trade cases and determinations do not apply," he added.
Imports for major specialty steel product lines during January-May 1993 period compared with last year are tabulated below.
 Imports Imports
 (tons) (tons)
 Jan.-May Jan.-May Percent
 Product 1992 1993 Increase
 Stainless steel sheet & strip 84,698 131,647 55
 Stainless steel plate 11,203 13,649 22
 Stainless steel bar 17,745 24,427 38
 Stainless steel rod 14,263 20,545 44
 Stainless steel wire 7,873 8,905 13
 Total 135,782 199,173 47
 Tool steel 12,965 16,203 25
 Electrical steel 35,466 40,617 11
Heaton said: "The nations of this world must come to grips with the fundamental problems of dumping and subsidies. Surely it is time for American public policy to come down on the side of productive, fully competitive domestic manufacturing industries like specialty steels, including their skilled workers. Our country is not well-served when less productive and less technologically advanced foreign companies, who have long been the beneficiaries of government supports, can rob our companies and our citizens of opportunities in our own markets."
The Specialty Steel Industry of the United States is a Washington- based trade association representing U.S. producers of stainless and alloy tool steels, electrical steels and other high technology metals. The industry employs approximately 35,000 men and women and has annual shipments of about $6 billion.
