SURFING THE TUBE.

As one of the founding members of ESPN's ``SportsCenter,'' Tom Mees saw what began as a tiny all-sports cable channel blossom into a huge institution. A tribute that ESPN plans today for Mees, who drown Wednesday in Connecticut, sounds like the most fitting way to thank him for his contribution. Airing during ESPN's 8 a.m. ``SportsWeekly'' program, the tribute will be hosted by Bob Ley and Chris Berman, who started at ESPN with Mees more than 15 years ago. It includes a video retrospective and memories from Mees' friends and peers. Mees, 46, drown in a neighbor's swimming pool Wednesday in Connecticut. ``There's no way to articulate the exuberance, fun and enthusiasm Tom brought to anything he did, on and off the air,'' said Ley. ``SportsCenter would not be what it is today without the 60- to 80-hour work weeks he put in when ESPN was just a rumor.''
