SURFCONTROL STOPS WORMS AT THE GATEWAY.
Unless corporations put in place measures to protect themselves, this virus will not only wreak havoc, but it will also compromise corporate confidentiality, warns SurfControl.
The virus, which manifests itself as an email attachment with the name "SirCam32.exe," recently made its public debut and has already infected hundreds of organizations nationwide. While the worm operates similar to other viruses, it has the ability to randomly select a personal or confidential file from a user's infected hard drive - and then send that file to the user's contacts via Microsoft Outlook.
"New viruses are always cropping up," said Kelly Haggerty, VP of Product, SurfControl. "It is therefore extremely important to implement content security policies to contain outbreaks of viruses and worms. Since SurfControl's SuperScout Email Filter can evaluate all email attachments based on file-type, it has the ability to stop destructive worms at the gateway," continued Haggerty.
SurfControl, Scotts Valley, Calif., a leading provider of email and web management tools, helps corporations integrate content management tools and processes into part of an overall security standard operating procedure.
Organizations should take the following steps to prevent the spread of viruses entering and exiting their virtual border.
1) Install SuperScout Email Filter between the email server and the virtual border by downloading a free trial version at www.surfcontrol.com
2) Create a policy in the SuperScout Email Filter to check inbound and outbound email and their attachments for viruses.
3) Create a policy in the SuperScout Email Filter that deletes or isolates for review all emails with ".vbs" or ".exe" attachments for all employees, except those with a valid business reason for using visual basic scripts or executables.
4) Set the SuperScout Email Filter to notify the recipient that the sender has attempted to send them an attachment not allowed under the company's policy and what action has been taken.
5) Update your anti-virus software regularly.
