SUPERIOR SURGICAL REPORTS RECORD 1992 YEAR-END RESULTS AND DISPUTE WITH GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY

SEMINOLE, Fla., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Superior Surgical Mfg. Co., Inc. (AMEX: SGC), one of the nation's largest manufacturers of uniforms, career apparel and accessories, today announced that for the year ended Dec. 31, 1992, sales were up 10 percent to $128,665,516, compared to 1991 sales of $117,502,780, and net income was up 24 percent to $9,914,182 or $1.15 per share, compared to 1991 net income of $8,025,228 or $.94 per share (per share figures re-stated to reflect June, 1992, stock split).
Gerald M. Benstock, chairman and CEO said: "The year 1992 was the best in Superior Surgical's history. Based on the results achieved and confidence that 1993 will again be a strong year, the board of directors on Feb. 5, 1993 increased the quarterly dividend from $.0625 to $.07 per share. The current combination of strong liquidity, future debt capacity and high working capital positions the company to partake of opportunities as they become available." Benstock also reported that the company is engaged in a dispute with an agency of the federal government that may affect future operating results. The dispute involves the applicability and interpretation of various terms and conditions relating to certain sales by the company to the government, alleged non-compliance therewith by the company, and an allegation that a former vice president of the company in charge of governmental bids and quotes provided incorrect information to the government. The sales in question are believed to have begun in 1983 and continued until Sept. 10, 1992, when the company notified the agency that it would accept only open market purchase orders. Gross sales to the government pursuant to the relationship represented less than 3 percent of the company's aggregate gross sales during the period in question. The agency is currently reviewing the matter for a determination of possible breach of contract damages and other charges that it may seek from the company. Although the company believes it has complied with the terms and conditions of its sales obligations in the relationship, it has expressed to the government a desire to cooperate and settle the dispute amicably for a presently undetermined monetary amount. The company is unable to predict the ultimate outcome of the dispute. However, the company believes any payment of breach of contract damages and the resulting charge against earnings and impact on liquidity of the company would not have a material adverse effect on the assets or continuing operations of the company. The dispute does not involve the integrity of the company's products.
Superior Surgical manufactures and sells a wide range of uniforms, career apparel and accessories for the hospital and healthcare fields; hotels; fast food and other restaurants; and public safety, industrial, transportation and commercial markets.
