MEET Ricky and Bholu. Ricky is a rich, English- speaking, urbane boy. He eats pizzas, burgers and hot dogs and wears designer clothes.

Bholu is a country bumpkin who eats dal- roti , wears ordinary clothes and speaks in Hindi and rural dialects.

But in the classroom, Ricky struggles to solve a sum while Bholu can easily the same question in 10 different ways.

Ricky and Bholu are cartoon characters, but you wouldn't have seen them in any animation film or on any television channel. For, they are the brainchild of Anand Kumar of the Super 30 fame.

While the super success of his coaching institute in helping students crack the IIT- JEE has brought Kumar international acclaim, what's not that wellknown is how he has used a multi- media technique to instill confidence among his students.

Kumar's students belong to extremely poor families and can't speak English. So he realised early on that they might develop inferiority complex once they were on the IITcampus.

" I thought of doing something to instill self- confidence in them," he said. And thus Ricky and Bhola were born. " I created these characters to make my students believe in their abilities." At IIT- Delhi, Suresh, the son of a brick- kiln worker, was asked by some foreigners doing a survey if he had any inferiority complex since he was wearing a slipper. Suresh shot back that he was the topper in his class.
