SUNRISE MEDICAL REPORTS 70 PERCENT NET INCOME INCREASE FOR SECOND QUARTER

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Medical Inc. (NYSE: SMD) announced today record sales, net income and earnings per share for its second quarter, ending Jan. 1, 1993. Net income increased 70 percent to $3.2 million, while earnings per share advanced 53 percent to $.23 from $.15 the year before. Sales grew 41 percent in the quarter to $74.3 million, up from $52.9 million last year. This marks the 16th consecutive quarter of record sales and earnings versus the comparable prior year period.
For the six months, sales gained 39 percent to $146.0 million from $105.0 million one year earlier, net income rose 68 percent to $7.3 million from $4.3 million, and earnings per share reached $.53 versus $.34, a growth rate of 56 percent.
Commenting on the quarter, Richard H. Chandler, chairman and president of Sunrise Medical, said, "We were very pleased with results in the second quarter, which continued the strong trends seen in the first quarter. Rehabilitation Group sales grew 34 percent to $46.0 million, despite unfavorable foreign exchange comparisons. Custom wheelchairs gained 51 percent globally, including the effect of last year's European acquisitions, while increasing 34 percent in the U.S., where Quickie Designs continued to gain market share in power wheelchairs. Sales of power chairs nearly doubled and are expected to remain strong, aided by two new models -- the Quickie P200 and P110. Both wheelchairs received enthusiastic receptions at November's NHHCE trade show and will begin contributing to results in the third quarter.
"The Recovery Group delivered a 52 percent sales gain to $28.3 million in the quarter," Chandler continued. "Excluding the effect of the October acquisition of Comfort Sleeper, sales were up 13 percent. Aided by margin improvement at Bio Clinic and Joerns, group profits reached record levels for the quarter. Bio Clinic now has 23 rental service centers operating coast to coast."
For calendar 1992, Sunrise reported sales of $285 million, a 34 percent gain over 1991. Net income rose 63 percent to $15.0 million versus $9.2 million the year before, while earnings per share advanced 44 percent to $1.12 from $.78. The company's net margin increased a full point to 5.3 percent from 4.3 percent in 1991.
Two small but important integrating acquisitions were announced during the quarter. Magic in Motion Inc., a manufacturer of sports products for the disabled (racing wheelchairs, snow and water skis, hand-driven cycles) with sales of $1.5 million, has become a division of Quickie Designs. Reha Vertieb Humpert S.A.R.L., (RVH), the exclusive French distributor of the company's Sopur line of German made wheelchairs, with sales of $1.5 million, will immediately be renamed Sopur France and integrated into Sopur GmbH.
Sunrise Medical designs, manufactures and markets internationally medical products used in rehabilitation and recovery phases of patient care. Products include custom manual and electric wheelchairs, ambulatory and bath safety aides, patient-room beds and furnishings, and therapeutic mattresses for the management of pressure sores. Sunrise products are designed to meet the special needs of four groups of people: the elderly, the disabled, the recovering patient, and the health-conscious consumer.
