SUNRISE MEDICAL EXPANDS DISTRIBUTION IN FOUR EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND ACQUIRES ASSETS OF AMIGO BENELUX N.V. TORRANCE, Calif., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Medical Inc. (NASDAQ: SNMD) announced today that it has established two new sales and distribution companies to cover France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Sunrise Medical S.A.R.L., located in Roissy near Paris, will distributek?ie custom wheelchairs and other Sunrise rehabilitation products to the French market. Sunrise Medical B.V., located in Bodegraven, Netherlands, will distribute Quickie, Guardian and Sunrise Medical Ltd. products to the three Benelux countries. The two new operations will be directed by local country managers, who will report to Barrie Payne, managing director of Sunrise Medical Ltd. Sunrise also announced the acquisition of selected assets of Amigo Benelux N.V., previously the company's distributor for seven European countries. As part of the transaction, Sunrise has leased two Amigo office/warehouse facilities, acquired inventory, furniture and equipment, and hired 14 Amigo employees, including eight field salespeople who were previously selling Quickie products in France, Germany and the Benelux countries. "In essence the Amigo Benelux distribution organization will be split into two parts," said Richard H. Chandler, Chairman and President of Sunrise Medical Inc. "The people, facilities and inventory associated with distributing Sunrise products will be folded into our European operations, while Amigo will continue to operate in France and the Benelux countries as a distributor for other manufacturers. They will also remain a major dealer for Sunrise Medical, selling our products to end users through their five retail locations in Belgium and Holland." Chandler continued: "The agreement with Amigo provides us with a strong foundation for launching our own distribution companies in France and the Benelux countries without heavy start-up costs. The people that will be joining Sunrise have contributed to Amigo's outstanding reputation for product knowledge and customer service. Combined with our recent acquisitions of Sopur in Germany and Uribarri in Spain, both of which manufacture and market wheelchairs, we now have company salesforces and distribution facilities which service directly over 3,000 dealers in the heart of the European Community. The countries we cover ourselves are: the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. We will continue to sell our products through existing independent distributors in the remaining countries of Europe. We believe we are now positioned better than any other rehabilitation equipment manufacturer for the harmonization of the European Community at the end of 1992." Sunrise Medical designs, manufactures and markets internationally medical products used in the rehabilitation and recovery phases of patient care. Products include manual and electric wheelchairs, ambulatory and bath safety aids, patient-room beds and furnishings and therapeutic mattresses for the management of pressure sores. Sunrise products are designed to meet the special needs of three groups of people: the disabled, the elderly and the recovering patient. -0- 3/26/92 /CONTACT: Ted N.
